Joining the Group

Please note that I, like many other faculty members, receive an extremely high volume of emails from interested applicants and others seeking research experience (e.g., as an undergraduate from another institution, high school student, etc). Please note that I generally do not work with undergraduates from other institutions, or high-school students, at this time and I am unlikely to respond to unsolicited requests for research internships if we do not have a prior connection.

Outside of that, if you are interested in working with me as a researcher, there are a few ways to get involved.

Joining my group as a PhD student

If you are interested in pursuing a PhD, I am recruiting PhD students through the JHU CS PhD program. To ensure I see your application, list my name as a faculty you are interested in working with on the application form. I do not accept students outside of this annual cycle (application deadline in December).

Note: I generally do not meet with students prior to the admission process, and it is not necessary to email me in advance before you apply: After reading your application, if I think there is a potentially good fit, I will reach out to schedule an interview. If you decide to send me an email regardless, please use the exact subject line “Interested in a PhD [Code Word: Mango]” to demonstrate that you’ve reviewed my webpage before reaching out.

Joining my group as a postdoc

If you are interested in working with me as a postdoctoral researcher, you can do so through the Malone Center for Engineering in Healthcare Postdoctoral Fellows Program, or the Data Science and AI Institute Postdoctoral Fellowship Program. These programs have their own application process.

Current JHU student?

If you are currently at Johns Hopkins (e.g., as an undergraduate or master’s student), please fill out this Google Form. I will get in touch if there’s a good fit for a potential research project.
